“I’ve been lucky to work on a lot of films that I consider good scripts, me personally. I’ve also worked on films that I’ve had to do because I’ve had to pay the rent,” Ray Winstone recently told The Belfast Telegraph. “But that’s part of the game, and then you work on them and try and make them better films, with help from the director and the people you’re working with. But it doesn’t always work out that way.” So we’ll see where his next gig ends up on his list: paying rent or good script.
Variety reports that Winstone has joined the “Point Break” remake taking the role of Pappas, played by Gary Busey in the original, the way only Gary Busey can play any role. Winstone joins Gerard Butler and Luke Bracy in the Ericson Core-directed remake that the producers promise will be totally different than Kathryn Bigelow‘s film, except for the character names and title. Which then begs the question: why call it “Point Break” at all?
“The script only shares in common with the original the characters and the nature of the character dynamic between Utah and Bodhi and their relationship,” producer Broderick Johnson told Collider. “Everything else about the movie is different. The narrative of the movie is different. While we do have surfing in the film, it is only a subset of the extreme sports that we deal with, including free-climbing, motocross, wing-suiting and so forth.”
“What we found fascinating about the original film, and is preserved in this, is the character work and the relationship between Bodhi and Utah, who are these two gentleman on opposite sides of the law, but yet, at the same time, share a common bond,” he continued. “That’s the one element that the two movies share.”
Yes, because no other movie ever has focused on two people on opposites side of the law who also respect each other, possibly bromantically.
Anyway, we’ll see how free-climbing and motocross deepens that textured character work in the do-over.
