It may not have been the immediate record-smashing success that Warner Bros. would have wanted, but “Edge of Tomorrow” is hardly the bomb many prognosticators tipped it to be with just inches separating the film from crossing $300 million worldwide mark. With box office success like that, director Doug Liman has wasted no time in lining up a new gig.
THR reports the “Swingers” director has entered discussions with Warner Bros. to mount a remake of the 1981 John Huston-helmed soccer/WWII film “Victory.” The original film starred Max Von Sydow, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pelé and centers on allied prisoners of war interned in a German POW camp who are forced to play a soccer match against a professional German team, all the while plotting their post-match escape. Sports movie expert Gavin O’Connor (“Miracle” and “Warrior”) is writing the script for the remake that was no doubt greenlit based on its inclusion on our list of the great – and not so-great – soccer movies to watch in celebration of the World Cup. At least that’s what we’re going to claim.
In other remake news, Deadline reports the wholly unnecessary American remake of French New Wave director Eric Rohmer’s 1982 “Le Beau Mariage” has landed “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” actress Jena Malone as its lead. The original film is part of Rohmer’s series of “comedies and proverbs” films and the remake – titled “Claire” – centers on “an eccentric young woman in her 20s living in Long Island with her aunt and teenage cousin. Fed up with her married painter lover, Claire sets her sights on a man she barely knows with aims to get herself married.” Music video director Dori Oskowitz will make his feature-length directorial debut with the film.
