Rian Johnson Explains What 'The Last Jedi' Means

We’re three months and some change away from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” landing in cinemas, and right now, the marketing push is a bit quiet. That won’t last for long, and for those of you enjoying anticipating the movie, with only a minimum of released footage, those days will soon end. However, you can choose to stuck your head in the sand until the film is released, and even director Rian Johnson encourages fans to ignore the upcoming onslaught of promotional material. But he’s also part of that campaign too, and his latest stop is at The New York Times.

Of course, the filmmaker has to play cagey about saying too much regarding the followup to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but he does give a clear(er) answer as to what ‘The Last Jedi’ means.

“It’s in the opening crawl of ‘The Force Awakens.’ Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi. And he’s removed himself and is alone on this island, for reasons unknown,” Johnson explained.

Meanwhile, he also confirms that it’s Luke Skywalker who says that the Jedi must end in the trailer.

“That’s him. It sounds pretty dire. That’s something that we’re definitely going to dig into. The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, What is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?,” he added.

Lots of questions, but the answers will arrive when “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” opens on December 15th.
