Lost in the controversy surrounding “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is the fact that regardless of fandom’s opinion on the film, filmmaker Rian Johnson is still a pretty great talent. You may not like what he did with Luke Skywalker, Snoke, or Rey’s parents, but the writer-director has already impressed many with his work on “Brick” and “Looper” before he took on the massive “Star Wars” universe. So, set your lightsabers aside because today we have Johnson’s ‘Last Jedi’ follow-up and it’s probably not what you’re expecting.
In the new video for LCD Soundsystem’s song “Oh Baby,” we see that Johnson has signed on acclaimed actors Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn to star as two scientists furiously attempting to develop a teleportation device. Sadly, that’s really all I can say at this point because since the Rian Johnson-helmed video is a Tidal exclusive (and I’m firmly in the Spotify camp), I can only access a teaser for the video. But for those that bought into the Tidal hype and are paying for the subscription, please tell us what you think! Because frankly, it definitely looks interesting and different.
LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy said in a statement (via Pitchfork), “My goal would be that it works as a video for the song and the song works as a good soundtrack of the film. Rather than a video that serves the song.”
This isn’t the only project that Rian Johnson has on his plate before he ventures back into space fantasy. It was recently announced that he’s teaming up with ‘Bond’ actor Daniel Craig for a seemingly awesome mystery film, “Knives Out.” You see, the folks at Disney/Lucasfilm have said that they’re on a “Star Wars” “slowdown,” so there’s no real rush for Johnson to finish up soon. Plus, Craig has some time off, as ‘Bond 25’ is delayed as the new director figures out how to move forward.
So until then, do check out the video for “Oh Baby.”
