This past weekend at D23, there was plenty of fanfare about “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” but aside from a sizzle reel, not much was revealed about the upcoming film. Indeed, just like “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” details are being unveiled very slowly for the movie. However, we now know a little bit more about the opening crawl that will kick off chapter eight in the saga.
Speaking with The LA Times, director Rian Johnson admitted that the traditional opening text to the movie proved to be a challenge to finalize. In fact, it was only solidified very recently.

“I realized as I was refining it what he meant. We didn’t finish the opening crawl and totally lock it until a few weeks ago actually. Because you’re like, ‘Do we need this word, do we need that word, what if we shift.’ It’s like a poem, there’s very little room for error in trying to get it just right. Which is awesome, it’s really fun,” he stated, noting that George Lucas once described that task as akin to writing a haiku.
Of course, we’re not going to know the content of the crawl until the movie opens, but Johnson let one word out of the bag: “Decimated.”
