Richard Linklater's ‘That’s What I’m Talking About’ Lands Official Spring 2016 Release Date

That's What I'm Talking AboutAt the beginning of the year, Richard Linklater felt confident that his tentatively titled, spiritual sequel to "Dazed & Confused — "That’s What I’m Talking About" — would “…probably be out next summer or fall.” However, we’ll be waiting a bit longer.

Paramount has officially slated the movie to hit cinemas on April 15, 2016. That will put it up against Disney‘s "The Jungle Book" and Jason Statham‘s "Mechanic: Resurrection," but fills the vacant slot left by "Bad Moms," a comedy project produced by Judd Apatow, and slated to star Leslie Mann, that the studio was trying to turn around quickly, but fell apart when the pair exited last month.

It’s an interesting gamble by Paramount, who clearly believe that Linklater’s film, led by an ensemble of lesser known young actors — Tyler Hoechlin, Wyatt Russell, Ryan Guzman, Zoey Deutch, Will Brittain, and Glen Powell — will have broad appeal. Then again, no one expected "Boyhood" to be the indie sensation that it was either.

Now the big question is where the movie will premiere. TIFF and Venice make their initial lineup announcements this week — could it pop up somewhere in there? Or maybe Linklater will return to Sundance, where he’s always received lots of love, or perhaps he’ll take a stab at Berlin next winter. But count out Cannes, not only because the movie will already be in theaters — they actually turned down "Boyhood." [THR]
