While doing the press rounds for this month’s sci-fi sequel “Men in Black III,” certifiable genius make-up designer Rick Baker let slip that he’s already hard at work on Disney’s eagerly anticipated “Maleficent,” a take on the studio's classic animated “Sleeping Beauty” as told through the iconic sorceress’ point of view. That sorceress, of course, is being played by Angelina Jolie. “They’re just starting that now,” Baker told ComingSoon.net. “I designed the make-up for Angelina Jolie. At this point, I’m actually finished with that part of it.”
“That part of it,” we’re assuming, is the sorceress’ unforgettable look – draped in blacks, purples and aquamarines, Maleficent is known for her headdress, which features two predominant, devilish horns. Previously, Jolie had told Entertainment Weekly that, while they were still figuring out her exact look, “The horns are the horns – you can’t deny them. You have to have the horns.” What could Baker still have left to do or design? Well, we’re guessing that, just like in the original animated “Sleeping Beauty,” at one point Jolie’s Maleficent will transform into a towering, fire-breathing dragon, and while that dragon might end up being computer-generated, Baker could certainly have a hand in designing it.
Whatever Baker ends up contributing, we’re sure it’ll be astounding and wonderful (even if the movie itself is not). We hear the script by Linda Woolverton is dynamite, and we're looking forward to the feature debut of longtime production designer Robert Stromberg. “Maleficent,” which also stars Elle Fanning, Sharlto Copley, Kenneth Cranham, Lesley Manville, Miranda Richardson, Sam Riley and Imelda Staunton, is set to debut on March 14, 2014.
