So far, it’s been nothing but good news coming from Disney regarding its upcoming streaming service. All the right moves have been made, quality projects are being developed, and top-flight cast and filmmakers have been acquired. So, it should be no surprise that the first bit of news about the upcoming Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ series “Cassian Andor” is promising more of the quality we’ve come to expect.
According to Discussing Film, Disney+ has signed “Dope” filmmaker Rick Famuyiwa to helm some episodes of the upcoming ‘Rogue One’ spin-off series, “Cassian Andor.” While it’s great news to hear that Famuyiwa is onboard to direct some of the series, this isn’t a complete shock. The filmmaker has already paid his dues on Disney+ and in ‘Star Wars,’ as he was hired to direct two episodes of the upcoming series “The Mandalorian.” So, it appears that the Mouse House was so excited by his work on that series, they want to keep him around.
As mentioned, Famuyiwa is probably best known as the filmmaker behind “Dope.” However, since then, his career has been full of false starts. After the 2015 film, he was signed on to bring DC’s “The Flash” to the big screen. However, as we’ve covered extensively over the last few years, that film has a revolving door for directors, with about 357 of them (roughly) exiting the project by now.
That being said, his talents have been in demand, as he’s signed on to develop quite a few films, with one or two (hopefully) seeing the light of day soon. Until then, he’s flexing his big-budget sci-fi/fantasy muscles over in a galaxy far, far away. Not a bad way to pay the bills, huh?
There’s no official release date for “Cassian Andor,” but with “The Mandalorian” not launching until November, this new ‘Star Wars’ series likely is destined for a mid-to-late-2020 premiere.
