While it’s nothing new to see Hollywood snatch up the English-language remake rights to a popular international film, it does feel like it’s happening very quickly nowadays. And the latest film set to get the English-language treatment is the Danish thriller, “Riders of Justice.”
According to THR, Lionsgate and 21 Laps have secured the rights to make an English-language remake of the recent Danish film, “Riders of Justice.” The film is set to be produced by 21 Laps, which includes producers Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen. One of the team’s more recent films is the 20th Century Studios hit, “Free Guy,” which is actually directed by Levy.
“Riders of Justice” tells the story of a soldier who comes home from deployment to care for his teen daughter after his wife was killed during an apparent train accident. However, after reports begin to surface that foul play might have been involved, the soldier and his ragtag group of cohorts go on a revenge mission. The original film is directed by Anders Thomas Jensen. Interestingly, Jensen is set to join the original film’s co-writer Nikolaj Arcel to craft the script for the remake.
“There are few films that balance the action, emotion, and dark humor that Anders did so successfully in ‘Riders of Justice,’” said Erin Westerman, Lionsgate’s president of production. “We’re confident that the movie will translate perfectly to English-language audiences as well.”
It’s unclear when production might begin on the new “Riders of Justice,” however, it does appear that Lionsgate is excited by the prospect of bringing the film to English-speaking audiences. If you’d rather not wait for the remake and would like to watch the original, which stars Mads Mikkelsen, you can do so now on Hulu.
