Last year was a busy time for filmmaker Ridley Scott. Not only did he release the latest entry in his legendary Sci-Fi/Horror franchise, “Alien: Covenant,” but the director also released the Oscar-nominated film “All the Money in the World.” Needless to say, Scott is a man who likes to keep busy.
In a new interview with IndieWire, the filmmaker talks a little about how he enjoys fast-paced working, but mainly talks about how great TV is nowadays. And apparently, the director is flirting with the idea of helming a series sometime in the future.
Scott is no stranger to TV. Back in 2013, the director helmed the pilot episode for a series called “The Vatican.” However, that was never picked up to series. Nowadays, Scott can be found as a producer on a variety of series, such as “The Terror,” “Strange Angel,” and “Taboo.”
When asked about what intrigues him about working in TV, Scott says, “I really enjoyed it. I love the speed. I like working fast. I would certainly go ahead and do a show. Probably just a pilot, but you know, once you bite off a little bit you want to do the lot. I think doing the lot becomes pretty challenging if you’re doing a limited series. Six would be doable. Ten starts to get rather long.”
The conversation then turned to what the filmmaker is currently watching. “I just finished a show called ‘Killing Eve.’ Really good. Great writing, but great casting. [Sandra Oh] is fantastic. I love her. She’s got such a great sense of humor and I think the rare psychopath is extraordinary. There’s a dark humor to it all, which is what I really liked,” Scott said.
And as has been debated over the last few years, as more and more viewers find quality series on TV, they’re potentially less likely to go to the movie theaters. Of course, the rising ticket prices and lower attendance at theaters seem to back that up. Scott also sees the ludicrous amount of quality TV to be something that can cause issues in the film industry.
“There’s so much original, inventive, innovative stuff coming out of television as well. It’s really presenting a big problem for the feature film business,” Scott said.
Well, now we just have to wait for Scott to fully commit to being part of the problem in the future. We obviously are ready to see what type of series could come from the legendary director.
