You knew it was coming. 2929 Productions, the company behind “The Road” said today:
“We know the release of ‘The Road’ is eagerly anticipated by millions of fans who love the book as well as many others. The film simply won’t be ready in time to release in 2008. Depicting McCarthy’s post-apocalyptic tale involves an incredible amount of visual effects and we want to make sure to give this beautiful movie the time it needs to be perfected.”
No date has been set for the release, though THR said a March or February release is ready. As the LAT suggests, “The Road” might be in better favor with the Weinstein Company, right? Afterall “The Reader” wasn’t ready, but that didn’t stop Harvey and co. from forcing a gun to its head for a December release, right?
Or is it just that the Weinstein’s don’t see much Oscar hope in director John Hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy? We’ll know soon enough. If by small chance, “The Road,” finds itself a fall 2009 release date, it’ll have a second chance, but if it gets dumped in Q1, let that be the official take on how the Weinsteins feel about the film. They’ll probably at least give Hillcoat a few more months to get it into a shape where they can make that call.
