Remember when Rob Marshall sounded somewhat uncertain“Pirates Of The Caribbean:On Stranger Tides,” the 4th film in the “Pirates Of The Caribbean” series?
While the film was recently confirmed to be shooting in Hawaii this summer, no other details had been dropped, and in December Marshall had noted that Johnny Depp was shooting the “The Tourist” in the spring and voiced some reservations.
“I would need a script first,” he said about explaining any visual style he would attempt to bring to it. “It all comes from the script and the story. You serve the story and you find out what the story is and then you work from there, that’s it. It’s simple.”
Well, in case you had doubts, Disney has confirmed it all. Marshall is directing, Depp will star and yes, Jerry Bruckheimer is still producing this beast that will shoot in the summer according to the AP. Marshall is coming off the bomb that was the Weinstein Company’s “Nine” and taking over for series director Gore Verbinski who eventually bailed for his adaptation of “Clue” that has yet to get off the ground (but he jumped to the animated film, “Rango” anyhow which is apparently in post-production and features a familiar voice: Johnny Depp).
Do we really need a fourth film and wasn’t “At World’s End” bad enough? Hey, it’s Disney, these things make loads of cash and it’s not really for this audience anyhow. It’s for people who would actively pay to see one of these movies. We’ll be curious to see what Marshall can bring to the series, but we have doubts. After all Keira Knightley and even Orlando Bloom bailed on the Mcfranchise, and he could probably use the paycheck. Maybe they should just call it, “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Depp’s Kids Retirement Fund.” If they can somehow tap the escapism and entertainment of the first film we suppose it should semi-worthwhile, but that’s a pretty big if at this point.
