Robert Downey Jr. To Produce & Potentially Star In 'Yucatan,' A Heist Film Originally Conceived By Steve McQueen

Striking while the iron is very, very hot, Robert Downey Jr. and his wife and producer Susan have set up the production shingle Team Downey at Warner Bros. bringing on producer David Gambino as president of production. And their first project? Bringing Steve McQueen’s dream project “Yucatan” to the big screen.

Conceived and developed by the classic action star but never brought to the big screen, plot details for “Yucatan” are tight but it has been described as a “heist film” that “centers on learning to respect the indigenous culture of the Yucatan Peninsula.” Downey’s project will utilize over 1,700 pages of notes on the project McQueen left behind after his death, building up the film from scratch. “Sherlock Holmes” producer Dan Lin, Chad McQueen and Lance Sloane will produce. RDJ (obviously) will have the first crack at deciding whether or not he will star in the film. No screenwriter or director has been announced yet.

The project has been kicking around Warner Bros. for a while now and was at one point set up with McG’s production arm Wonderland Sound and Vision, but thankfully, that version never happened.

This is yet another exciting project to added to Robert Downey Jr.’s growing slate of films, which currently include Alfonso Cuaron’s ambitious sci-fi film “Gravity,” “Sherlock Holmes 2,” “The Avengers” and “Oz The Great And Powerful.”
