Sure, maybe all the hype surrounding “Alita: Battle Angel” didn’t lead to massive box office returns and a new franchise quite like Robert Rodriguez hoped it would. But that isn’t stopping the director from continuing to work on new properties. So, how better to move on from ‘Alita’ than a kid-friendly superhero film for Netflix?
According to Deadline, Rodriguez is set to write, produce, and direct a new kid-friendly superhero team-up film titled “We Can Be Heroes.” The film, which clearly is going to skew more towards the director’s “Spy Kids” creative sensibilities, follows a group of children that must team up to save the world after their superhero parents are taken hostage by alien invaders.
The report also says that Priyanka Chopra Jonas is attached to star in the film, which is currently in production. Chopra Jonas is probably best known, to American audiences at least, as the star of the short-lived TV series “Quantico,” as well as films like “Baywatch” and the recent rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic?” She just wrapped filming on the upcoming film “The Sky is Pink.”
It’s no surprise that Netflix is behind this new endeavor. “We Can Be Heroes” has all the makings of a big streaming hit. Rodriguez is known, especially with families, as the man who crafted the “Spy Kids” franchise, which was a massive series and still has a following. And Netflix is obsessed with greenlighting projects that play well globally, and honestly, there aren’t many stars bigger than Chopra Jonas on a global scale. She has millions and millions of fans on social media and is one of the biggest stars in Bollywood.
As mentioned “We Can Be Heroes” is in production now, but there’s no official release date set.
