08.13.14 Update: POWER RANGERS will open on July 22, 2016 in wide release, from Lionsgate. Here’s the updated synopsis: From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.
Whew! You were so worried that the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – as we like to remember from their original incarnation – would fall into the wrong hands (remember, when "morphed," the Rangers become powerful superheroes wearing color-coded skin-tight spandex battle suits and helmets with opaque visors). Just imagine this children’s fantasy series being directed by Len Wiseman or some producer that just helped maim some other franchise and then left it for dead. *Cough*
Hmmm, let’s start over here. “The Power Rangers” movie has a new creative team! Roberto Orci, who has some free time on his hands now that he’s no longer part of Sony’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” series has signed on to executive produce the series because clearly he has a strong and passionate understanding of the kids series. The film has found some screenwriters as well and has hired “X-Men: First Class” writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz to pen the screenplay. Hooray for everything, pray for our eyeballs.
Go, go Power Rangers! [THR]
