“There was something weird about me from the beginning. I don’t know exactly when I started loving monsters so much, but it was definitely early. When I was 4 or 5 years old, I would ask my mother, ‘Can I sleep in the coffin tonight?’ and I would lie down in a drawer or I would sleep in a toy box,” Guillermo Del Toro recently shared with Empire. “There’s even a recording of me, aged three or four, asking for a mandrake root, for Christmas, to use in magic rituals.” So yeah, needless to say, GDT has been dreaming of monsters his whole life. And “Pacific Rim” is certainly the biggest effort of his career, and a few more sneak peeks have arrived for the movie.
Two new images have dropped giving a closer look at the robots smashing the monsters that have arrived after rising from the watery deep. There’s going to be a lot of stuff getting punched and kicked in various futuristic ways, but Del Toro hopes to bring some operatic quality to the proceedings, describing the fights as “Wagnerian.” So it’s epic, ambitious stuff which is certainly what the newest TV spot for the movie is hoping to get across as well. Will you be there opening day?
“Pacific Rim” rumbles on July 12th.
