The forthcoming relationship comedy “Cheaters” directed by Ron Howard is getting a slight change; the film will henceforth be known as “What You Don’t Know.” What we do know, is that we don’t like it and that it’s far less edgy and direct than the its working title.
Starring Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum and Queen Latifah, the film centers on a man (Vaughn) who finds out his best friend’s wife (Ryder) is cheating on him (James), only to struggle with what to do with the knowledge. Tatum plays Ryder’s lover.
We like the talent involved, but man, Vaughn has really delivered some softball-sized comedy misses lately, including “Couples Retreat,” “Four Christmases” and “Fred Claus,” and the January 14, 2011 dumping ground release doesn’t particularly bolster our confidence. That said, Universal is smartly pitting the film against “The Green Hornet,” making it a strong counter-programming choice and certainly, they are hoping the film will do the same gangbusters numbers as “Couples Retreat,” one of the few bright spots for the studio over the past 18 months or so.
