Rose Byrne Joins Kristen Wiig's Untitled Comedy Formerly Known As 'Bridesmaids'

Rose Byrne has joined the cast of the upcoming Kristen Wiig-starring/Judd Apatow-produced untitled wedding comedy formerly known as “Bridesmaids” which the SNL-star also co-scripted.

Byrne, known for her recent work on the TV show “Damages,” will play a bridesmaid who rivals Wiig’s maid of honor for the attention of the bride, to be played by Wiig’s SNL castmate Maya Rudolph. The report notes, however, that the script and production is still evolving — already evident in the fact that Wiig was originally supposed to be the formerly-titular bridesmaid — so don’t be surprised if the story and characters change again before it goes in front of cameras. But they don’t have too much time to mess about, the film is already scheduled for a May 12, 2011 release date.

Also joining the cast is British actor Chris O’Dowd (“The I.T. Crowd,” the upcoming “Gulliver’s Travels”) who will play the groom caught up in all the shenanigans with the film’s IMDb page additionally noting an unconfirmed TV-friendly supporting cast which includes Ellie Kemper (“The Office”), Melissa McCarthy (“Gilmore Girls”) and Wendy McLendon-Covey (“Reno:911”).

Apatow previously jumped on board the project as a producer and brought along “Freaks And Geeks” collaborator Paul Feig as director in what is somewhat of a landmark for the super-producer evidently being his first female-led comedy. Hopefully it’ll be the first of many though with the already talented bunch of thesps already involved sparking our interest just as much or more than some of his other projects in the works.
