Somehow, Rose Byrne has gone from strong dramatic work, such as on the long-running series “Damages,” to a comedic filmography that is pretty much unparalleled, with starring roles in “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” “Neighbors (1 & 2),” and now “Instant Family,” starring alongside Mark Wahlberg. But in a new interview with the New York Times, the discussion turned to a film that she starred in that probably will never be released, Louis C.K.’s “I Love You, Daddy.”
If you’re not familiar with the situation surrounding “I Love You, Daddy,” it’s fairly simple to summarize. Comedian Louis C.K. wrote and directed a film starring himself opposite Chloë Grace Moretz and Byrne. However, as the film was prepping for release, C.K. became embroiled in a #MeToo controversy, and the film ended up being shelved. Since then, there’s been no word on the film’s eventual release (if it ever happens) and C.K. has made a few surprise appearances in comedy clubs, as he begins his attempt to resuscitate his career.
When Byrne was asked whether it was difficult to watch the film get shelved amid the controversy, she said, “Of course. You go in with such great intentions, and Louis was very sweet with me, and I had a very respectful experience. But it’s obviously very complicated, and I stand with the women who came forward.”
Byrne continues, “But yeah, it is conflicting when you commit to something, just from my experience of, ‘Wow, this is a really weird, dark story — I’m intrigued by it.’ And then it becomes a much bigger thing than what it is. I think it will be a while before that film can be seen, and I think that’s right.”
She was then asked about her views regarding C.K.’s recent comeback, as mentioned above. There’s been controversy surrounding his surprise shows at comedy clubs, which has included his jokes about his situation, as well as fans being displeased with watching him perform.

“It’s too soon for him to have a surprise one, that’s for sure,” the actress explains. “I think if he’s going to show up, just let everybody know so then they can make a decision, like, ‘I don’t want to see this guy — I’m out.’ It’s also the gatekeepers around these things who give people the chance to have a comeback. They’re actually really powerful. I would like to see them being held accountable a little bit more.”
As we said above, “I Love You, Daddy” doesn’t look like it’ll be released anytime soon. However, if you want to catch Byrne in a film, she’s currently starring in the hit comedy “Instant Family” and will be seen in another upcoming comedy, “Limited Partners.”
