Rotten Tomatoes Reveals Best TV/Films Of 2020: 'His House,' 'Host,' 'Babysitter's Club' & More

Every year, we’re inundated with Best Of lists from all over the place. However, no matter if it’s from Pedro Almodovar, Barack Obama, or even us, there’s one thing that binds them all together—subjectivity. Well, over at review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes, the website aims to limit the subjectivity as much as possible by just crunching the numbers for its best films and TV series of the year.

This year, the Best Films and Best TV Series of 2020 lists from Rotten Tomatoes is sure to surprise many. “Nomadland?” Nope, sorry. “Minari?” Uh uh. Instead, on the film side of things is you have a bunch of documentaries (obviously, 2020 was a good year for docs, so this makes sense) and smaller films that people might not have rushed out to see.

Leading the way, however, you have the thriller, “His House,” from director Remi Weekes. This film debuted at film festivals and earned instant acclaim and then when it debuted on Netflix, nary a critic had a negative review. There are also projects such as“Host,” from the Shudder streaming service, coming in at #3. This is a film that has been receiving rave reviews from when it debuted earlier this year, but isn’t one that you’ll see in theaters or on Blu-ray. “Host” is created using Zoom and filmed entirely over the lockdown. In fact, the film is a COVID-19 film in the sense that the pandemic plays a huge part in the horror offering. Although the antagonist is anything but a virus.

On the TV side of things, leading the way is “The Babysitter’s Club,” Netflix’s recent reboot of the popular YA franchise. At #2 you have the underrated dramedy, “Feel Good,” followed by the Emmy-sweeping, “Schitt’s Creek.” “Pen15” Season 2 comes in at #4. Well deserved, at least from this humble writer’s perspective.

All told, the two lists are incredibly interesting and also surprising for how they aim to eliminate subjectivity (as much as review aggregators can) and try to showcase the 2020 projects that are the “consensus” choices.
