Consider this the biggest casting news in the history of the CW Arrowverse. We’re guessing it took one hell of a pitch, but the network has been able to secure Ruby Rose to star as Batwoman in the upcoming Arrowverse crossover and potential spin-off series, according to Deadline.
While most of the CW DC superhero shows are littered with TV actors, Ruby Rose has been cruising lately in big-budget blockbuster films. Sure, she hasn’t had a starring role yet, but she’s appeared in films like “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” “John Wick: Chapter 2,” “Pitch Perfect 3,” and the upcoming “The Meg.” No, she’s not winning any Oscars for her roles, but Rose is an actress that seems to be in-demand. And now, she’s taking that buzz to the CW that seems to be positioning her the new face of the network.
Regardless of how they managed to sign Rose, the big news about this casting is about inclusivity. Rose will play Kate Kane, aka Batwoman, who is a highly trained street fighter taking out criminals in Gotham. Oh yeah, and she’s also one of the few out lesbian superheroes. And now, with the addition of Ruby Rose, CW has secured a lesbian actress to take the role.
As mentioned, before starring in her own potential series (which seems like a given at this point, right?), Rose will first appear as Batwoman in the upcoming annual superhero crossover on CW. Based on the success of that appearance, CW will figure out whether or not they want to move forward with the solo “Batwoman” series. But again, the network isn’t signing an actress like this unless it has a long-term plan.
The “Batwoman” series will come from writer Caroline Dries and producer Greg Berlanti, who is the godfather of the CW Arrowverse and pretty much the man single-handedly keeping the lights on at the network.
Before her action movie career, Rose starred as Stella Carlin on the popular Netflix series “Orange is the New Black.” She’s also a world-famous model and DJ.
