Sam Mendes Considered A Sean Connery Cameo In 'Skyfall'

nullAs we wrote yesterday, slavish devotion of franchise "traditions" and fan service isn't always a good thing. And for better or worse, "Skyfall" has a lot of winks and nods to the past throughout the 23rd Bond adventure, but this proposed move probably would have been one step too far.

Still doing the press rounds for the movie, Sam Mendes recently caught up with Huffington Post and revealed that at one point, a cameo from the first Bond himself, Sean Connery, was kicked around. "There was a definite discussion about that — way, way early on. But I think that's problematic. Because, to me, it becomes too … it would take you out of the movie," Mendes shared. "Connery is Bond and he's not going to come back as another character. It's like, he's been there. So, it was a very brief flirtation with that thought, but it was never going to happen, because I thought it would distract."

And we'd have to agree with Mendes. While Connery popping up in the latest Bond, during the 50th anniversary of the franchise, would have made fans go nuts, it also wouldn't have made much sense. And given that Connery has pretty much retired from acting altogether and has distanced himself from the series (he was the only Bond not to participate in the recent "Everything Or Nothing: The Untold Story Of 007" documentary), it probably wouldn't have happened anyway (at least not without some major teeth pulling).

So file under "Skyfall" trivia for now. The film opens in theaters nationwide on November 9th.
