Sam Rockwell is now an Academy Award winner. The 49-year-old character actor won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Martin McDonagh‘s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” It was also his first Oscar nomination. Rockwell dedicated his win to the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman.

The Oscar win comes only hours after Rockwell won his first Independent Spirit Award the night before. Rockwell was previously nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in the same category for “Seven Psychopaths” back in 2013, which was a performance also directed by McDonagh. During last night’s commencement speech, Rockwell made a point to thank “the entire independent film community,” joking that he had been in 932 independent films” and that this is the first time Rockwell has actually won for his performances. The actor/human dancing machine also made a point to celebrate Alexandre Rockwell and Steven Soderbergh, who were directors who gave him the break that propelled him into the career that landed him his Oscar.

In addition to these awards, Rockwell also won the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the SAG awards this year for the same performance, along with the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and the Online Film Critic Society Award.
Of course, Sam Rockwell has been a bright spot in several movies over the years, with literally a hundred acting credits to his name on IMDb, from blockbusters like “Iron Man 2,” “Cowboys and Aliens” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” to acclaimed indies including, but certainly not limited to, “Moon,” “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Frost/Nixon,” and “The Way Way Back.” He is also well-known for his turns in “Galaxy Quest,” “Choke,” “The Green Mile,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “Matchstick Men.” He is also soon set to appear in “Blue Iguana,” “The Adventures of Drunky” and Adam McKay‘s Dick Cheney biopic “Backseat,” where he’ll play George W. Bush. So there’s a good chance that we might see him at the Oscars again next year. Suffice to say, this isn’t the last time we’ll see Sam Rockwell. That’s for certain.
