Attaining realism can drive filmmakers to extremes when it comes to production design and costuming, but Quentin Tarantino is taking it to the next level for his western "The Hateful Eight." Already planning to present the film in cinemas in 70mm, the director has another trick up his sleeve, finding him immersing his cast into the experience of shooting a story told against a wintry backdrop.
Set after the Civil War, the story follows a variety of colorful characters who get snowbound in a frontier way station, leading to several showdowns. And even if temperatures of the characters went high, Tarantino kept things literally cool on the set.

"All of us are so anxious to see this movie, because every day the work was incredible. It was taxing in a very interesting way, because we were in the snow at first, and then we get inside this room," Samuel L. Jackson told Collider. "Quentin shot on a refrigerated set, and it was 30 degrees every day in there. We were miserable in the environment. You could see our breath, but the stuff that we were doing was amazing. We would finish doing a scene and look at each other and just grin like, ‘this is incredible.’ And we may be blowing smoke up our own asses, but I hope it’s as good as we felt like it was when we were doing it."
It’s an intriguing approach by the filmmaker that will certainly add another splash of palpable texture to his upcoming movie. "The Hateful Eight" arrives in cinemas later this year, with real actors feeling really damn cold onscreen.
