For a brief moment there, it seemed like Scarlett Johansson and Woody Allen were inseparable. Starring in (almost) three straight movies for the director — “Match Point,” “Scoop” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (Allen also delivered “Cassandra’s Dream” in that stretch) — the actress was part of the director’s late stage career return to glory after nearly a decade marked by a series of increasingly bad films. But after that trio of pictures, they parted ways at Allen’s insistence, fearing that the actress would become defined only by her work with him.
“I have every intention of working with her again, but I just didn’t think it was a great idea for either one of us to work together too intensely, picture after picture. I didn’t want her to be burdened by, ‘Oh, she’s in all the Woody Allen pictures, it’s so predictable,’ and she’s my new muse, and all that silliness,” he said to Vanity Fair. But as for Johansson, she’s eagerly waiting for her phone to ring again.
“I don’t think anything’s played out. I’m waiting for him to write my ‘Citizen Kane,’” she says. And while it’s easy to be cynical and scoff at the ambitious statement, Johansson tends to be underrated on the acting front. Remember, David Fincher seriously considered her for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” on the strength of her audition footage (she was ultimately deemed too sexy for the role, however) and she took home a Tony award for her part in “A View from the Bridge.”
“I’d spent four months bleeding all over the stage, completely exposed. I felt I was forever changed by that experience. It was unbelievable holding that Tony,” she says.
Oh and in case you care, those nudes of Scarlett Johansson that were hacked from her phone? They are from a few years ago, they were sent to her husband at the time, Ryan Reynolds, and while she’s mortified they got out there, the act of taking such photos is no big deal to her. “There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not like I was shooting a porno” she said, adding, “Although there’s nothing wrong with that either.”
She’ll next be seen in “We Bought A Zoo” in December, followed by “The Avengers” in the following Spring. She’s currently filming Jonathan Glazer‘s cerebral sci-fi thingy “Under The Skin,” playing, of course, an alien. And while we have to wait and see if Johansson and Allen will get together again, perhaps there will be room in his next film, which is tentatively being eyed for a Munich shoot.
