Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Atticus Ross & Shigeru Umebayashi Team For Score
It’s pretty much impossible — unless you are willing to completely forgo eating and sleeping — to see everything at the Cannes Film Festival and there are always one or two films that you once you’re back at home you regret having missed. And for us, that film is the Mexican thriller and midnight movie selection, “Days Of Grace.” We were taken with the excellent trailer for the film and now that the soundtrack and score details have surfaced, we’re kicking ourselves for not finding a way to work it into our schedule.
Directed by Everado Gout, the movie takes place over three World Cups—in 2002, 2006 and 2010—and centers the repercussions of the violence between cops and criminals. But to help tell the tale, the filmmakers got some fantastic talent on board to soundtrack the film; it’s pretty much a wet dream for music score enthusiasts.
Speaking with La Cronica (via Ant) producer Oscar Ramirez revealed, “The film will have three types of music for each of the stories he weaves. The first is by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the second by Oscar-winning ‘Social Network‘ [composer] Atticus Ross and Shigeru Umebayashi and the last line will be with Massive Attack and Scarlett Johansson, who played music in the main theme, ‘Summertime.'”
Forgive the Google translation, but while the press notes for the film confirm their inclusion, the Scarlett Johansson and Massive Attack team-up is definitely a detail that is new. The actress has sung the song on record before, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on the benefit album “Unexpected Dreams,” but this version will certainly be quite different. There’s no word on if the score will get an official release but man, a disc with new music by Cave, Ellis, Ross and Umebayashi (best known for his work with Wong Kar-Wai on “In The Mood For Love” and “2046“)? One can dream. For now, check out Johansson’s pipes on “Summertime” below.
