Ever since Richard Linklater‘s “School Of Rock” became a surprise smash hit a decade ago (has it been that long?), there has been talk of a sequel that seems unlikely to ever happen. “…we were unable to crack the code and get to a place where everybody was happy and everyone was ready to go,” Jack Black told us at SXSW in 2012 about a potential followup. “So we just, I don’t know – I haven’t given up, and I’m hoping that we can find it.” However, there will be a way for you to rock out with one of the best fictional bands the movies has produced.
Mega producer and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (“The Phantom Of The Opera,” “Evita“) revealed to CBC Radio that he landed the rights to “that movie ‘School of Rock.’ ” That’s about all the news there is at the moment, and the big question is what songs will be in it. Webber seems happy with the ones the film already has. “There may be songs for me in it, but it’s obviously got songs in it as it stands,” he explained.
However, it will be interesting to see what tunes actually do make the eventual musical. Jack Black had to famously beg Led Zeppelin to use “Immigrant Song” in the movie, and all the classic rock stuff in general in the flick won’t be cheap to come by. But then again, it’s Webber, and dude is a legend, so he probably won’t have too much trouble convincing folks to be part of this. So with “Magic Mike” and now “School Rock” headed to Broadway, what should be brought to the stage next? [via EW]
