Scott Derrickson's Dream 'Star Wars' Film Is An R-Rated Horror Set On Hoth & Inspired By 'The Thing'

No one, outside of the upper echelons of Disney and Lucasfilm, knows, for sure, what’s going on with the future “Star Wars” films. As Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has said previously, considering the Skywalker Saga (and thus, George Lucas’ vision of the franchise) has concluded, “We’re literally making this up from whole cloth.” Well, if Kennedy is reading this, I fully endorse “Doctor Strange” filmmaker Scott Derrickson’s idea for a new “Star Wars” standalone film.

On Twitter, recently, Derrickson revealed his idea for a “Star Wars” film that he’d like to make. And while he admits that the idea “will never happen,” it’s just too damn good to see go to waste.

“I didn’t pitch this,” said the filmmaker. “I was asked at dinner last night by @joelmchale’s kid what Star Wars movie I would make, and my answer was an R-Rated Hoth movie in the vein of The Thing. But that will never happen.”

An R-rated horror film that combines the cold, snowy landscape of Hoth and John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece? This would be pretty amazing. And Derrickson is perfectly capable for the job, as he broke out in a big way as the filmmaker behind “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” and “Sinister.” This is a guy that understands how to scare the pants off of people and has shown the aptitude to translate his skills in the realm of massive franchise blockbusters, as he proved with “Doctor Strange.”

Alas, as he said, this dream “Star Wars” film isn’t ever going to happen, as Lucasfilm would never stray so far away from the Jedi/Sith long enough for a modest horror film on an ice planet. And as much as fans seem to always love the idea of R-rated genre films (especially since “Joker,” “Logan,” and “Deadpool”), “Star Wars” will never, ever sport an adult rating, simple as that.

That being said, this film, though a loose idea, is already playing in my mind, and it’s absolutely glorious.
