After her role in “Lady Bird,” and just about everything else she’s done over her short career, Saoirse Ronan is an actress that you have to keep an eye on. It just seems like the young actress never picks a bad project. Judging by the first trailer for her next film, “The Seagull,” it looks like that streak will no doubt continue.
While the trailer may not be the best marketing material to ever hit the internet, it does accomplish its task – sell the film based on the amazing cast and crew. “The Seagull” doesn’t just star Ronan, but it also features actors such as Annette Bening, Elisabeth Moss, Corey Stoll, and Brian Dennehy. The film is based on the classic play by Anton Chekov, and tells the story of an aging actress who visits her brother and her son on a country estate. She brings a successful novelist (Stoll) and drama ensues.
The footage seen in the trailer doesn’t lend itself to a completely dramatic affair. No, there are definite signs that this film is going to have plenty of humor and quirk to spare, particularly with Moss’ character, who looks to be a bit of a drunk. A quipy, loveable drunk.
The film is directed by Michael Mayer, returning to feature film for the first time since 2005’s “Flicka,” and is written by himself and acclaimed playwright Stephen Karam. According to EW, who posted the trailer, the film was shot over the course of 21 days. Based on the star power on screen, and creative minds behind the camera, “The Seagull” is a film that should be on your radar.
“The Seagull” opens in select cities May 11.
