The long and winding road of “Search Party” is really something and to that end, has there ever been a comedy series that has evolved as much as this one? Created by “Fort Tilden” filmmakers Sarah-Violet Bliss, Charles Rogers, and Michael Showalter (“The Eyes Of Tammy Faye“), beginning on TBS and then graduating to HBO Max eventually, “Search Party” began a dark satire and send-up of millennial life and culture, all twisted up in a mystery: the search for a missing girl, whom the protagonist (Alia Shawkat), went to school with, but barely knows.

From there, well, it seriously evolved with tons of twists and turns. “Search Party,” over the course of five-season and many years, transformed into a murder mystery, a kind of Hitchcockian morality thriller, and in recent years took a turn into stalkers, kidnapping, a near-death experience, and all sorts of craziness that included the break-up of the main group of friends that starred in the show.

How is it going to end? Well, we’ll know that answer soon. Today, HBO Max has released the official trailer and poster for the critically-acclaimed series. The dark comedy’s fifth and final season debuts, Friday, January 7, with all ten episodes available to binge that day.
In the new season, Dory (Shawkat) enters a very public business partnership with charismatic tech billionaire Tunnel Quinn (Jeff Goldblum) on the other side of her near-death experience. Dory folds her old friends Portia (Meredith Hagner), Elliott (John Early), and Drew (John Reynolds) into the venture as they embark on an altruistic but terrifying journey. Joining the cast are recurring guest stars Kathy Griffin, John Waters, Aparna Nancherla, Angela Trimbur, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Greta Titelman, Joe Castle Baker, Larry Owens, and Michelle Badillo. Returning recurring guest stars include Jeffery Self and Clare McNulty.
Showrunners Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers executive produce the series along with Michael Showalter and Jax Media’s Lilly Burns and Tony Hernandez. “Search Party” has ardent fans, and while season four was a little shaky to some, here’s to hoping it really sticks the landing in its fifth and final season.
