'Secret In Their Eyes' Director Juan Jose Campanella To Helm Animated Soccer Pic 'Metegol'

If you didn’t catch last year’s Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Film “The Secret In Their Eyes,” do yourself a favor and throw it into your Netflix queue right now. The film is a thrilling blend of political history, police procedural and romance with the centerpiece of the movie arriving in the form of a fantastic “single take” five-minute chase sequence at a stadium during a soccer match. It’s breathless, inventive filmmaking and worth the price of admission alone, and for director Juan Jose Campanella, he’s taking that clear love of soccer into a new project.

The director has signed on to helm “Metegol,” an animated film that “follows an underdog who, with the help of foosball figures that come to life, must take on a star soccer pro to save their village.” The film, which actually sounds like it could be decent fun, is working with a modest $9.75 million budget and will find Campanella utilizing local Spanish voice talent with Pablo Rago, Fabian Gianola, Miguel Angel Rodriguez, Horacio Fontova and David Masajnik all on board.

The film is in production for a 2012 release. No word yet if it’ll land stateside, but we hope it does. Until then, check out the that stadium sequence after the jump:
