One of the most haunting murder cases in recent years was that of Meredith Kercher, a British student who was brutally killed in her bedroom in Italy. The local police charged three people: local man Rudy Guede, Kercher’s roommate Amanda Knox, and Knox’s Italian boyfriend. They were all convicted, but Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were later acquitted, though suspicions still remain in some quarters about their involvement.
It’s an extraordinarily complicated, fascinating case, and now it’s heading to the big (and small screen) with a new Netflix-backed documentary about it, that will premiere tomorrow at TIFF. Hailing from directors Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn, the film sees Knox, Sollecito and more giving exclusive interviews on their side of the case.
But don’t expect this to be an apologia, as the trailers that Netflix debuted this morning make clear — the two clips are themed around ‘Believe Her’ and ‘Suspect Her,’ one making her out to be a victim, the other a potential killer. It’s an intriguing approach, and one that promises to tackle the complexities of the case. And if nothing else, it can only be a better than that awful Michael Winterbottom movie that was ‘inspired’ by the murders.
“Amanda Knox” premieres at TIFF tomorrow, and then hits Netflix on September 30th. Watch the clips below.
