There was a moment when Eddie Murphy was known for his penchant for playing multiple characters in his comedies. Perhaps his best film featuring this gimmick is “Coming to America.” However, after that film came “The Nutty Professor” and its sequel ‘The Klumps.’ Now, in 2019, Marlon Wayans is here to carry the torch for this brand of whacky, multiple character comedy with the Netflix film “Sextuplets.”
As seen in the trailer, and as the title suggests, “Sextuplets” tells the story of a man (Wayans) that discovers that his biological mother gave birth to six children at once, leaving him to find his five long lost siblings. And considering this is a super over-the-top comedy, the siblings are each very different from Wayans and occupy some sort of comedy trope. There’s the loud, obnoxious sister. The overweight, but ridiculously strong, brother. And so on, and so forth. You get the idea. Basically, each is just another way for Wayans to throw on a wig and some prosthetics and play some new crazy character.
The film stars, well, Marlon Wayans. That’s about all you really need to know about the cast. I’m sure there are others in the cast, but really, if you’re watching “Sextuplets,” you’re doing it because you want to see Wayans as all the characters.
“Sextuplets” debuts on Netflix on August 16.
Here’s the synopsis:
SEXTUPLETS — a comedy from “White Chicks” and “Naked” producers Marlon Wayans and Rick Alvarez, plus producer Nathan Reimann (“Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo”) and director Michael Tiddes (“A Haunted House,” “Naked”) — tells the story of Alan, an expectant father who grew up believing he was an only child. While searching for his birth mother, Alan comes face-to-face with a brother he never knew existed, Russell, who helps him uncover their secret status as sextuplets (all played by Wayans). Soon they begin a spontaneous road trip to track down their additional siblings, but not before Alan wonders whether exploring his roots was a huge mistake.
