In the age of reboots, remakes, and reimaginings, viewers have seen so many of their beloved franchises and classic films get new iterations on TV. Hell, we’re even getting a new “ALF.” But one of the more surprising films to get new life on the small screen is “Sexy Beast.” The 2000 film, which is carried by one of Ben Kingsley’s best roles, is being developed for a TV series and it actually sounds…good?
According to Deadline, Anonymous Content and Paramount Television have joined forces to develop a prequel to the Oscar-nominated 2000 crime thriller. For those not familiar with “Sexy Beast,” the film follows a retired criminal, Gal Dove, who gets brought back into his life of crime, against his will by a former associate Don Logan. As you might expect from a potential prequel, the TV series will focus on the blossoming professional relationship between Don and Gal, and how it all ties back to the crime boss known as Teddy Bass.
The “Sexy Beast” TV series is being developed by Michael Caleo, whose writing credits include episodes of “Rescue Me” and “The Sopranos,” as well as the 2013 Luc Besson crime film “The Family.” Overall, he’s a bit of an unknown quantity, as his filmography isn’t as full as you might expect.
“Sexy Beast” is being produced by Anonymous Content and Paramount Television. The production companies have found a successful partnership on TV in recent years, working on projects like “13 Reasons Why,” “The Alienist,” “Catch-22,” and the upcoming Netflix series “Maniac,” which stars Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
There’s no network or premiere date mentioned, but the production companies are said to be shopping this series around to various cable networks and streaming services.
