Before he landed the job directing “Thor: Ragnarok,” before he dropped his delightful summer comedy “Hunt For The Wilderpeople,” Taika Waititi teamed with his pal Jemaine Clement and delivered the found footage, mockumentary comedy “What We Do In The Shadows.” The movie about the everyday lives of four vampires living together in Wellington charmed pretty much everyone who tracked it down, and there has been chatter over the past year or so from fans who wanted more. Well, they’re going to get it, but with a bit of a twist.
New Zealand On Air has announced they’re backing “Paranormal Event Response Unit,” a six-episode series that will follow the cops from the movie, Karen and Mike, as they investigate various supernatural events in a faux reality show. Or as Waititi describes it: “Think Mulder & Scully but in a country where nothing happens.” In the film, Officer Karen O’Leary and Officer Mike Minogue aren’t particularly great at their jobs either, coming to investigate the vampires, only to get hypnotized and miss the evidence of a murder.
The big question is if or when we’ll get to see ‘Paranormal’ on stateside screens. The series is set to debut in New Zealand next year, but there’s no word on any American networks or streaming sites picking it up. Given that it’s a spinoff of a niche comedy, I would assume it’ll be a streaming service stepping in, and hopefully those conversations will start happening soon. [RNZ]
The cops from Shadows are getting their own TV show. Think Mulder & Scully but in a country where nothing happens.https://t.co/fxYQhheWPG
