Shailene Woodley To Star In High Seas Survival Drama ‘Adrift’

So far this year, Shailene Woodley has made headlines primarily for two things: being part of the failed “Divergent” franchise, which won’t be concluded with the fourth film “Ascendant;” and being arrested for participating in the pipeline protests at Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. But now she’s getting ready to go back to work with a movie that’s being described as “Gravity” on the high seas.

Woodley will star in “Adrift,” which will be helmed by Baltasar Kormákur, who is no stranger to survival tales as the director of “Everest.” Penned by Aaron and Jordan Kandell, this based-on-a-true-story tale will recount what happened when Tami Oldham and her fiancé, Richard Sharp, set sail from Tahiti, encountered a massive hurricane which destroyed their vessel, and left Tami fighting to survive on her own in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. So yes, feels like “Gravity” but mixed with “All Is Lost.”

Filming will begin on the project next spring, and it sounds fairly Oscar-bait-y, but we’ll see if it’s done in time for the next awards season. [Deadline]
