The BFCA handed out their 2018 Critics Choice Awards tonight in a hanger in Santa Monica, CA and Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” was the night’s big film winner.
Not only did it take Production Design, Original Score and Best Director (Guillermo del Toro) honors, but Best Picture as well. “Shape’s” sister Searchlight title “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” took Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell), Best Actress (Frances McDormand) and Best Ensemble.
A number of films won two honors each, including “Darkest Hour” earning Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and Best Make-Up, “I, Tonya” taking Best Supporting Actress (Allison Janney) and Best Comedy Actress (Margot Robbie), and “Get Out” saw Jordan Peele take Original Screenplay and, um, Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie.
“Baby Driver” won Best Editing, James Ivory won Adapted Screenplay for “Call Me By Your Name” and “Blade Runner 2049” took Cinematography. It’s worth adding that “Wonder Woman” took Best Action Film and “The Big Sick” took Best Comedy Film.
“The Post” and “Lady Bird” were the only Best Picture nominees to leave the building without a win.
On the television side “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Big Little Lies” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” all took home multiple wins. On the reality TV side “The Voice,” “Shark Tank” and RuPaul, reality host, were big winners.
