The 2018 PGA Awards were handed out Saturday night in Los Angeles and the two big winners were “The Shape of Water” and “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
Guillermo del Toro‘s period fantasy took the theatrical prize, giving it a key guild win which is considered historically necessary to win the Oscar for Best Picture. The past two years the winner of this honor did not end up winning the Academy Award (“La La Land,” “The Big Short”), but it won the previous eight years beginning with “No Country For Old Men” in 2008. Del Toro will attempt to win two of the three guild prizes next month as he’s up for Best Director at the DGA Awards. “Shape” was not nominated for SAG Ensemble.
“Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” lead all 2018 BAFTA nominees
“The Handmaid’s Tale” took the Episodic Television – Drama category beating out fierce competition including “Big Little Lies,” “Game of Throne” and “Stranger Things,” last year’s winner. Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” continued its surprising guild awards run, taking the Episodic Television – Comedy honor over “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Veep” and “Master of None,” among others.
Other winner included “Black Mirror,” “Jane,” “The Voice,” “Sesame Street,” “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Carpool Karaoke.”
