ShortCuts: 'Away From Her' Cleans Up At Genie Awards, New Coens Bros. 'Burn' Set For September; Libertines Reform For Musical? More

Sarah Polley’s directorial debut, “Away From Her” cleaned up at the Genie awards – the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar awards. The underachieving (in the U.S.), but exellent film won seven awards including Best Picture, Best Actress (Julie Christie), Best Actor (Gordon Pinsent; pictured) and Best Director. This film is dear to us having seen Polly on television all our lives not to mention her fucking top-notch indie ethics. We also really loved the score and included some songs from the film below. It’s not a movie per se, but it will be comedic. Rapper 50 Cent will appear at “Wrestlemania.” No mention of hip-hop steroid scandals please. [MTV]

Still haven’t seen “No Country For Old Men” (shame on you), you better hurry up, the Coen Brothers next film, the CIA comedy “Burn After Reading,” starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich and Frances McDormand, is already set for a September 12 release. [Movie Web]
Petra Haden contributes closing credits to “An American Crime” [Stereogum]

Petra Haden has written the song “Closing Credits For An American Crime” with composer Ari Lazar for the film, “An American Crime,” starring Catherine Keener and Ellen Page. The film premiered at the Sundance 2007 festival and will show up on Showtime this year, meaning it’s not good enough for an actual theatrical release. [Stereogum]

Ex-Libertines, former pals and once arch enemies Pete Doherty and Carl Barat are apparently going to write a musical together. Barat already has a wealth of bitterness stored from all the times Doherty stole his gear to buy crack, so finding song subjects, shouldn’t be a problem. [Sunday Mirror]

The sublime DVD artwork for “There Will Be Blood” is enough to make us want to renege on the rule that we really don’t need to own anymore more friggin’ movies. Apparently however, it’s not enough to coax director Paul Thomas Anderson to record some fucking commentary. [/Film]

Like-minded pinko musicians Ben Harper, Tom Morello and System of a Down’s Serj Tankian will perform at SXSW for the documentary and soundtrack “Body of War,” inspired by a U.S. soldier paralyzed while listening to Eddie Vedder music serving in the Iraq War. [Billboard]
