“It Comes at Night” is a polarizing film. While there are many (myself included) that love Trey Edward Shults‘ psychological thriller, there are some people that are turned off by the pacing and the fact that despite hinting at something in the woods, nothing actually comes at night. That being said, Shults appears to be making a zig when you thought he might zag for his next film.
Fresh off the heels of one of the more dark and depressing thrillers of the last few years, Shults has chosen a teenage musical for his next outing. While you might be shocked about that development, when you find out the people the filmmaker is bringing on board the project, suddenly it becomes one of the more anticipated films.
“Waves” will be Shults’ ‘Night’ follow-up and is described by Variety as a dramatic musical with a fresh spin, focusing on contemporary teenage life. The film will feature two couples attempting to navigate the “emotional minefield” of falling in love and growing into adulthood. While we don’t have a full cast yet, it appears that Shults has wooed Lucas Hedges and Sterling K. Brown to star in the film. And perhaps most exciting of all, Academy Award winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are on board to write the score.
As for the music, the report says that “Waves” will be mostly synchronized to music, with some “iconic” contemporary songs mixing with the aforementioned Reznor/Ross score.
Lucas Hedges is on a bit of a roll lately, with star-turning performances in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” “Lady Bird,” and “Manchester by the Sea.” The latter of which earned the young actor an Oscar nomination. He’ll next be seen in “Boy Erased,” which has a lot of awards buzz, as well as the Jonah Hill-directed “Mid ‘90s.”
Brown has been dominating the TV world with his massive hit “This is Us,” as well as his award-winning role on ‘The People vs OJ Simpson.’ On the film side of things, he’ll be seen in the upcoming Shane Black reboot “The Predator” and has “The Rhythm Section” coming soon.
We didn’t know it existed until this morning, but suddenly “Waves” becomes one of the most anticipated films on our schedules. It can’t get here soon enough.
