With her iconic style, which includes her face being partially covered by hair, singer-songwriter Sia has become one of the most recognizable pop stars on the planet. And as if music domination wasn’t enough, it appears Sia is ready to branch out and take on the world of feature filmmaking with a new project, “Music.”
According to Hanway Films, the studio has secured the distribution rights to the forthcoming musical, aptly titled, “Music,” which serves as the directorial debut for Sia. And to help lead the musical’s cast, Sia signed on Kate Hudson, with a buzz cut no less, to play a free-spirited woman that must take on the reins of guardianship over her half-sister. In addition to Hudson, the film also stars Maddie Ziegler (a frequent collaborator with Sia over a variety of music videos), Leslie Odom, Jr., Mary Kay Place, Juliette Lewis, Ben Schwartz, and Hector Elizondo. The film is co-written by Sia and writer Dallas Clayton.
Here’s the synopsis for the film:
“Kate Hudson plays Zu, a free spirit estranged from her family, who suddenly finds herself the sole guardian of her half-sister, Music (Maddie Ziegler) a teenager on the autism spectrum whose whole world order had been beautifully crafted by her late grandmother. With a history of addiction issues which have challenged her self-worth and reliability, Zu can barely take care of herself and she struggles with the new responsibilities her sister brings. But Music has the watchful loving eye of her local community and Zu soon learns that life’s obstacles can be made easier with a little help from their neighbour, Ebo (Leslie Odom Jr.). The film soon challenges whether it is Zu or Music who has a better view of the world, and that love, trust, and being able to be there for each other is everything.”
And if you’re a big Sia fan, perhaps the best news of all is that the film not only features the recently-released song, “Together,” but an additional 10 tracks written by Sia and performed by members of the cast. I mean, it is a musical, after all.
HanWay Films’ Gabrielle Stewart said, “Sia’s debut film ‘Music’ surpasses every expectation and she uses to extraordinary effect her own original music and dance sequences to present a bright alternative reality for her lead character Music, who is played with incredible delicacy by the talented Maddie Ziegler, an exciting discovery for international audiences. Sia has elicited awards-worthy performances from each of her three lead actors, including a tour de force from Kate Hudson and a third awards opportunity for Leslie Odom Jr.”
