Even with “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” in theaters now, there’s still a lot of discussion about the things not in the film. While it’s not completely crazy to switch directors between films, the exclusion of star Emily Blunt has left many people wondering why they even bothered with a sequel. Well, it appears that the plan was always to leave her character out of the film, but that doesn’t mean the franchise is done with Blunt yet.
Speaking to Business Insider, director Stefano Sollima discussed why Emily Blunt’s Macer was left out of the film, and why it was important not to have a moral compass for ‘Day of the Soldado:’
“Emily Blunt is an amazing actress, but her role was sort of a moral guidance for the audience. In ‘Soldado,’ we don’t have that. This is closer to my vision of storytelling. I prefer not to have a moral guidance for the audience.”
Sollima also discussed why he thinks it’s a good idea for each of the ‘Sicario’ films to have different creative visions. This was mentioned because the filmmaker has said that even if they do a ‘Sicario 3,’ he will not be the director.

“It’s more interesting to have a saga where you have completely different directors doing each movie,” he said. “They will hire another director with their own vision and style.”
And with the successful opening of ‘Day of the Soldado,’ finishing above predictions, it appears that a third ‘Sicario’ film could very well happen. And the creative minds behind the scenes are already trying to figure out what that might look like. And yes, it could very well include a return of Blunt.
Speaking to CinemaBlend, producer Trent Luckinbill discussed the possibility of Blunt’s Kate Macer returning:
“Sure. Yeah. Absolutely. I think Taylor certainly has some ideas about all of that, but we’re open to that world and certainly would love to bring Emily back. We haven’t written the script yet, but yeah it would make a lot of sense. We’re all fans of the movie, we’ve all come to the same conclusion, which is ‘It would be great to see her again.’ So I think we’re striking up those conversations now.”
So at this point, all we know is that Blunt’s Macer could return and if she does, it will be with a new director at the helm. But it appears that all that comes down to the script by Taylor Sheridan. Because who knows? We could see an entirely new cast of characters for ‘Sicario 3.’
