There are few action film icons that can hold a candle to Ripley from the ‘Alien’ franchise. Played perfectly by Sigourney Weaver, the character started as a simple crewmember on the Nostromo and evolved into one of the biggest badasses in sci-fi/action history. But even the best have to hang up their guns eventually, and for Weaver, she thinks Ripley is definitely a character that should retire.
Speaking to Empire, the actress was asked about a future in the ‘Alien’ franchise, reprising her role as Ripley. And though she revealed that she’s been offered multiple films to return in, Weaver just doesn’t think it would be a film franchise she wants to go back to.
“I don’t know,” Weaver said. “Ridley has gone in a different direction. Maybe Ripley has done her bit. She deserves a rest.”
The most recent effort to get a fifth ‘Alien’ film going (not including the ‘Alien vs Predator’ films and Ridley Scott’s prequels) has been a long and arduous process. Of course, Neill Blomkamp tried and failed. And apparently, the actress says franchise producer Walter Hill gave her a 50-page treatment for another version of the fifth film to read. But even still, she’s not sold on the idea.
Though another ‘Alien’ film for Weaver seems like it’s not going to happen, the actress still has fondness for RIpley.
“I’ve always felt she was such a partner,” the actress said. “She is always in my stomach.”
Unlike the return of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor in the recent “Terminator: Dark Fate,” it appears that fans aren’t likely going to see an aged Ripley return to battle Xenomorphs in the dark depths of space. And a lot of fans would agree that it’s for the best.
