Back in January it was announced that Simon West was being given the keys to direct a remake of the horror classic "The Blob." The news garnered some attention, but didn’t exactly make huge waves, probably because West isn’t the most exciting name to be talking about. His debut with the action classic "Con Air" has forever remained his high mark, with a serious dip in quality ever since, culminating in this year’s forgettable Jason Statham flick, "Wild Card," which was barely released into theaters. But West is talking a big game about what he plans to do with the Steve McQueen starrer.
He promises a "bigger canvas" and a movie more rooted in "sci-fi," and then sets a pretty high bar for himself to clear. "The blob itself will be more sophisticated, more along the lines of ‘Alien‘ and ‘Predator,’ and things like that — much more science-based, the way ‘Jurassic Park‘ made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito," West told Den Of Geek. "This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It’ll be a much more sophisticated creature — because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."
And oh yeah, it will also be an "invasion movie."
Seems like West has lots of grand ideas, but we’ll see if he gets the budget to pull it off, or even if he has the chops to do so. He’ll have to go a long way in living up to his ambitions, though if it’s better than the already forgotten 1988 redo, perhaps that’ll be some sort of accomplishment.
