Singer Joanna Newsom Joins Paul Thomas Anderson's 'Inherent Vice'

Filming on Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Inherent Vice” has been underway for about two months now in Los Angeles and yet casting continues to trickle in. Due to the secretive nature of the production it seems like the only way anyone in the cast is actually confirmed is been when a picture of them on set hits the web. We know that so far the ensemble includes *deep breath* Joaquin Phoenix, Benicio Del Toro, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon, Josh Brolin, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Kevin J. O’Connor, Katherine Waterston, Timothy Simons, Peter McRobbie, Sasha Pieterse and Sean Penn (possibly/maybe). As if the cast roster could not possibly get any cooler, it looks like singer Joanna Newsom will be in the film as well.

Newsom is the singer/songwriter/harpist responsible for 3 excellent albums—you may also recognize her from her “Portlandiacameo or because she’s engaged to former ‘SNL‘ star Andy Samberg—and was recently spotted alongside Phoenix and Waterston on set in L.A. No word yet on who Newsom might be playing, but we can only hope her casting means her music might find its way into the film somehow.

The movie, based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, is a 1970s set
story set in Los Angeles, that follows the inept, pot-smoking private
detective Doc Sportello as he investigates the case of a kidnapped girl,
who also happens to be one of his ex-girlfriends. A fun bit of trivia: her song “Go Long” inspired filmmaker David Lowery in writing his neo-western “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints.” Check out pictures of Newsom on set with Phoenix in full hippie garb at Eyeprime.

“Inherent Vice” should be wrapping up filming shortly for a likely 2014 release.
