Before Sony and FilmDistrict close their offices for the long weekend, they've gone ahead and slated some upcoming blockbuster type films.
First up, and hardly any surprise, Roland Emmerich's sci-fi "Singularity" has been pushed back six months from its previously slotted May 17, 2013 release to November 1, 2013. When the brakes were put on pre-production recently to get the script for the $175 million dollar movie into a proper state, Sony claimed the spring date was still going to hold. But probably not wanting a repeat of the "Men In Black 3" fiasco, they've now wisely moved everything to give everyone some breathing room. Author, inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil is now on board to help tune up the script that centers on Adam, a young man whose life is saved when his consciousness is transferred to a swarm of nanobots, allowing him to gain powers. However, he soon ends up on the run from the evil company that created the technology. "Singularity" is currently sitting pretty all alone on that date, but obviously, it will get crowded over the next year or so.
Meanwhile, subbing in for "Singularity," the hyped "Pixels" will now get the primo spring date. Based on Patrick Jean's short of the same name — a glorified music video which featured a swarm of pixels attacking New York, taking the form of classic 8-bit video game icons like Donkey Kong and Space Invaders — the rights to the feature film project was purchased by Adam Sandler's Happy Madison after a heated bidding war last year. Last we heard, Sandler stable writer Tim Herlihy was penning the script and as far we know there is no director or star attached. But we guess we'll find out soon and the project must be far along enough that Sony is ready to date the thing.
Finally, the long shelved "Red Dawn" has finally received a release date, more than two years after the start of principal photography and after countless delays thanks to the MGM bankruptcy and a decision to go back and re-edit the baddies from Chinese to North Koreans. America will now stand proud when the remake arrives on November 2, 2012…just in time for the election (!?). Starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Josh Peck, Adrianne Palicki and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the movie follows a bunch of teens who have to protect the sanctity of their small town from those evil foreign bad guys. The movie will square off against Disney's "Wreck-It Ralph" and the Seth Rogen/Barbra Streisand comedy "My Mother's Curse." [BoxOfficeMojo]
