Tom Rothman has been dropping truth bombs all over CinemaCon. Already dishing out morsels about a possible New Mutants movie and revealing that, by hook or by crook, it will be Ridley Scott's version of "Prometheus" we see at the multiplex on June 8th, he delivered another interesting little nugget.
In the run up to the release of "Chronicle" earlier this year, director Josh Trank was said to be wanted by Fox to reboot their Fantastic Four franchise. During press rounds for the film, Trank said he hadn't heard anything about it, but he was either playing coy or the deal wasn't done, because Rothman reveals that Trank is involved — in some capacity anyway — in bringing the quartet of superheroes back to life after two rather middling movies that no one really liked.
“Josh Trank who did 'Chronicle,' I think this has been reported, is gonna come on and work on a take, or a vision, that he has for it, so we’re very excited about that,” Rothman told Collider, though he cautioned it's early, and Trank may not direct. “Well, I think there’s a possibility of [him directing]. I mean he’s gonna develop it now, and then it depends on the script.” But clearly, the studio is eager for a fresh angle so they can reboot the superheroes, and they're hoping his distinct and unique take can bring some much-needed verve. But that's not all on Trank's plate.
Last month it was reported that Max Landis had been re-hired to pen "Chronicle 2," a sequel to the surprise hit film. “[Chronicle 2] is in very active development. I think you’ll see that sooner rather than later,” Rothman stated. It's an intriguing turn of events, particularly as Trank was, initially at first, a bit wary of going down the sequel road. "I'm still not sure [about 'Chronicle 2']," Trank told us in February. "I was nervous this type of movie would be perceived as a gimmick, so I was in denial for awhile about what the potential of the film could be."
Finally, "Daredevil" is moving along but still at the script stage. With Rothman promising some superhero announcements this summer, it looks like there will be plenty of options for the studio to choose from. We're guessing that once scripts/treatments come in and they see where they're at, there will be some kind of announcement. But the "sooner rather than later" statement on "Chronicle 2" makes us think that should be one to bank on. More to come soon, we hope.
