Filming on Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere” recently moved to Italy where scenes have reportedly been shot with a host of Italian film, fashion and television stars.
One recruit for the film is evidently Nino Frassica. The 58-year-old Italian presenter recently took to discussing his participation in Coppola’s film while possibly revealing the inspiration drawn by Coppola from her own experiences in the spotlight with her father, Francis Ford Coppola for the film. Here’s a translation of what Frassica said courtesy of a commenter over at I Heart Sofia.
“Me and [actress Simona Ventura] play a scene which belongs to Sofia’s memories. Her trip to Italy with her father [Francis Ford Coppola] who came to receive the Telegatto Award. In the scene we give the Award to an actor, whose name I can’t remember and who plays the father [Stephen Dorff], while in the hall sits a little girls who plays Sofia [Elle Fanning].”
“Somewhere” centers on a bad-boy actor (Dorff) who is wasting away in the celebrity-clad Chateau Marmont when his estranged 11 year-old daughter (Fanning) shows up for an unexpected visit.
A writer drawing inspiration from their own life isn’t exactly something to write home about, but in the case of celebrity spawn Coppola and her life in the spotlight, it is interesting to note. The photographer boyfriend of Scarlett Johansson’s protagonist in Coppola’s “Lost In Translation” was rumored to be inspired by “Where The Wild Things Are” director Spike Jonze, Coppola’s ex-husband. The character was also likened to photographer Dewey Nicks, an ex-boyfriend of Coppola’s.
“Somewhere” looks set for a release sometime next year and is likely to continue the director’s trend of featuring at the major film festivals. Coppola’s “The Virgin Suicides” played at Sundance and Cannes; “Marie Antoninette” at Cannes and New York; while “Lost In Translation” featured at Venice and Toronto. [Corriere via I Heart Sofia]
