It’s now twelve years since we last saw “Charlie’s Angels,” the three kick-ass women in a private detective agency working for the mysterious Charlie, on the big screen. A huge hit in the late 1970s when it emerged, the Aaron Spelling series was rebooted on the big screen by producer Drew Barrymore and director McG for a 2000 film, with Barrymore co-starring with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu (and, in the first film, Bill Murray as Bosley), with a 2003 sequel, “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” following.

A 2011 TV reboot was short lived, but Hollywood’s love for a well-known property will never go away, and The Hollywood Reporter now reveal that Sony are developing a new version. And in place of McG, they’ve upgraded somewhat, at least from a feminist-friendly point of view, by actually putting the series in the hands of a female director, with actress and “Pitch Perfect 2” helmer Elizabeth Banks set to direct and produce the project.
There’s no writer on board yet, but we hope that Banks and her team can pull together something a little more narratively coherent than McG’s movies, because the appetite for a female-fronted action franchise is definitely out there, and ideally one less leery than both the original series and the early 00s movies. Banks has YA adaptation “Red Queen,” and possibly “Pitch Perfect 3” on the horizon, so this could be a ways off yet, but we’ll bring you more news as it arrives.
