Well, it won’t make it in theaters in time for its twentieth anniversary, but the long awaited sequel to “Trainspotting” is coming, and the picture has found a studio home.
Screen Daily reports that Sony TriStar have snapped up the worldwide rights to the untitled sequel. Thus far, details are being kept under wraps about what the movie will be about, but Danny Boyle has shared the followup won’t simply be an adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s “Porno,” as many expected.
“It’s not very directly from the book anymore, and it certainly won’t be called ‘Porno.’ It will be called ‘T2‘ if we can get the rights [alluding to James Cameron’s ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day‘],” he told The Daily Beast in September.
A few days later, the director told Rolling Stone, "People think the first film was about drugs; it’s not. It’s about friendship. John Hodge [the film’s screenwriter], has suggested a very peculiar alternate title that has to do with that idea. I can’t tell you what it is… but if we end using it, remember this conversation."
So, it would seem the title is still in flux. But as for the material, Robert Carlyle is pumped. “…we’ve already had a read-through of the script, we did that in the springtime. You’re going to think, ‘Of course he’s going to say this,’ but honestly, it’s one of the best scripts I’ve fucking read. I mean, ever. What John Hodge has done is just so clever," he told NME in November.
"…these four characters are 20 years older now and I’ve never seen a sequel that takes place 20 years after the original, so I think that gives it a certain unique quality,” he continued. “And of course, the audience is 20 years older too — people who came to see the original film when they were in their early twenties are very different people now. And the way John Hodge has put this thing down, obviously with the help of Danny Boyle, is to make it about how the characters’ lives have moved on… or have they? Without giving anything away, maybe some of them haven’t really moved on. That’s what the audience is going to have to go through with them. I tell you, this film is going to be quite emotional for people. Because the film sort of tells you to think about yourself. You are going to be thinking: ‘Fuck. What have I done with my life?’"
Production begins on "T2" in the the spring with Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, and Ewen Bremner also set to return.
